What do landing gear pins do?

By Carter Sullivan

Aircraft downlock pins are used to lock the landing gear in place. This pin fits into a hole in the downlock mechanism and locks the landing gear in the down position.

What holds the landing gear up down?

Hydraulic pressure
Hydraulic pressure holds the gear up, so there are no uplocks as on some aircraft. The landing gear retracts or extends in about seven seconds.

What is a nose gear pin?

The pins disrupt the retraction mechanism of the gear and prevents an inadvernt gear retraction on the ground. It is an additional safety feature to the weight on wheels logic system. Some aircraft have an inbuilt nose gear lock, which can be found in a side of the fuselage near the gear.

What is a bypass pin?

The Bypass Pin Kits are used in the Ground Support (GSE). They are used as Gear Pin or Steering Bypass Pin for pushback. When the pin is inserted, the steering hydraulics on the landing gear are bypassed. This allows the aircraft to be moved by a tractor without having to deactivate the entire aircraft hydraulics.

What are the two types of landing gear?

Landing gear usually comes in three basic wheel arrangements: conventional, tandem and tricycle-type. Beyond this, landing gear is then classified as either fixed or retractable. Fixed landing gear hangs underneath an aircraft during flight, whereas retractable landing gear is stowed inside an aircraft during flight.

What device aligns the nose wheels before retraction of the landing gear?

centering cams
As most aircraft have steerable nose wheel gears for taxiing, a way to align the nose gear before retraction is necessary. This is done by centering cams built into the shock strut structure. An upper cam connects into a lower cam recess when the gear is fully extended, thereby aligning the gear for retraction.

What is aircraft Gear pin?

The Landing gear pins are for all the gears, these are normally stored in the Cockpit/Flight deck, and the crew ensure same on board before flight. The steering bypass pin enables pushback with hydraulics pressurised to the steering system and this is shown to the pilots as clearence before taxi out.

What is Weathervaning aviation?

Weathervaning or weathercocking is a phenomenon experienced by aircraft on the ground and rotorcraft on the ground and when hovering. As most of the side area of an aircraft will typically be behind this pivoting point, any crosswind will create a yawing moment tending to turn the nose of the aircraft into the wind.

What is bypass pin kits and flags?

Bypass Pin Kit w/RBF Flag, Boeing B737 (100-500) quantity. Boeing B737 (100-500 series) Bypass Pin with Remove Before Flight Flag and Lanyard. Aircraft bypass pins are used to bypass hydraulic system steering on aircraft, allowing for steering to be controlled completely by the pushback tug.
