How are geologists and paleontologists alike and how are they different?

By Matthew Perez

A geologist is someone who is involved in the study of the outer layer of the earth’s crust. A paleontologist, on the other hand, looks at fossil remains on many types of organisms on the earth’s surface. Paleontology is the study of primitive life, including plant and animal organisms, fungi, bacteria, etc.

Is oceanography and marine biology the same?

While oceanographers study the oceans themselves—the chemistry, physics, and geology of ocean systems and how organisms shape these systems, marine biologists study marine organisms—their characteristics, physiology, and life history. Oceanographers study the conditions of our planet’s oceans.

What’s the difference between Oceanology and oceanography?

Oceanology is an area of Earth Science that deals with oceans. Oceanology, also called as Oceanography, is a vast subject covering a range of topics in the sub field areas of Physical, Chemical, Biological and Geological oceanography. Physical oceanography is the study of physical conditions and processes of the ocean.

What is the relationship between fossil and paleontologist?

Fossils are the remains or evidence of ancient plants and animals that have been preserved in the crust of the earth. Paleontology is the study of animal and plant remains. The fossil record generally goes from simple life forms to complex forms of life.

What are two specialized fields of geology?

Some Branches of Geology

  • Geochemistry. Geochemistry is the study of the chemical processes which form and shape the Earth.
  • Oceanography. Oceanography is the study of the composition and motion of the water column and the processes which are responsible for that motion.
  • Paleontology.
  • Sedimentology.
  • Additional Branches.

What education do you need to be an oceanographer?

A bachelor’s degree in oceanography or in basic sciences is the minimum educational requirement. Students contemplating a professional career in oceanography should consider getting an advanced degree.

What can a paleontologist learn from fossils?

By studying the fossil record we can tell how long life has existed on Earth, and how different plants and animals are related to each other. Often we can work out how and where they lived, and use this information to find out about ancient environments. Fossils can tell us a lot about the past.
