Are coilovers better than lowering springs?

By Liam Parker

Coilovers are a great alternative to a lowering spring set up because they allow you to adjust your ride height and come in many setups, from daily use to full track rated. Unlike lowering springs, you are not stuck with a single and stiffness.

What’s the difference between coilovers and lowering?

Unlike lowering springs, coilovers offer a much greater range of adjustability including ride height, spring pre-load, shock damping, and rebound. Typically, coilover sets feature even stiffer spring rates than a set of lowering springs alone, again sacrificing ride quality for cornering performance.

Are coilovers harsher than lowering springs?

Unlike lowering springs, coilovers offer greater adjustability, including ride height, spring pre-load, shock damping and rebound. Consequently, coilovers allow for ultimate balance and control of your vehicle.

Will coilovers help lowering your cars?

Coilovers for Ride Quality. Coilovers typically offer drivers a better ride quality, as it allows you to lower your vehicle and still get the feel and handle you are used to.

Does lowering a car make it faster?

Lowered vehicles are more aerodynamic. There’s less air hitting the wheels and tires (that are not streamlined shapes). This makes these cars faster. Some owners of low-stance vehicles also notice improved gas mileage.

Does lowering your car make it faster?

Why lowering your car is bad?

Poorly done or extreme lowering can cause suspension and steering parts to contact each other, the wheels or the tires. It could also cause tires to rub the body during turns or going over bumps.

What is the difference between lowering springs and coilovers?

Lowering springs, rather obviously, are just springs that provide a lower ride height and typically higher spring rates. Coilovers replace your entire factory strut and typically have height and dampening adjustment. Each system has its pros and cons, but how do you know which system is right for you?

Are there any cheaper alternatives to coilovers?

Since most springs are designed to be a cheap alternative to coilovers, they’re often very basic. There are some lowering spring kits, like H&R’s VTF Adjustable Springs, which are designed to incorporate height adjustment.

How do coilovers adjust ride height and spring rate?

Most coilovers include a way to make minor adjustments to the spring rate, and many coilovers use a system which allows ride height and spring rate to be adjusted independently of each other. Many coilovers also feature adjustable dampers which you can adjust via a rotating knob on the top of the coilover.

Which suspension is better coilovers or air suspension?

Air suspension is more expensive than a good set of coilovers, but it will typically provide better quality (you are riding on air, after all).
