Why do pepper seeds take so long to germinate?

Peppers are related to tomatoes, but have different requirements for germination. Sweet pepper requires a germination temperature of 75° – 80° (F). The seed trays benefit from being covered with plastic domes or plastic wrap to retain humidity until germination.

How do you speed up pepper seed germination?

Tips on How To Successfully Germinate Hot Pepper Seeds

  1. Use our Seed Starting Soil Pods.
  2. Place your seed tray in a sunny and warm windowsill or under grow lights or full spectrum utility lights.
  3. Soak your seeds overnight in warm water to help them germinate faster.
  4. Plant your seeds no more than 1/4 of an inch deep.

Are pepper seeds slow to germinate?

Pepper seeds can take anywhere from 7-10 days to germinate (for fast germinating varieties like Early Jalapeno seeds or our Mild Hatch Green Chile Seeds,) but some of the super hot pepper seeds like the hottest pepper in the world, the Carolina Reaper can take anywhere from 20-30+ days to germinate!

Are peppers hard to grow from seed?

Although starting pepper plants from seeds at home is generally a fairly straightforward operation, some peppers can be difficult to grow from seeds and, as a whole, require slightly more babying. For example, they like it warm, especially the hot peppers.

Do you soak pepper seeds before planting?

Unlike the seeds of some other plants, you shouldn’t soak sweet pepper seeds in water or place them in a cool environment to encourage germination. If your sweet peppers seeds have a lot of wrinkles, you can give them a hydrogen peroxide bath just before planting to prevent mold growth.

Will dried pepper seeds grow?

Fortunately, this beautiful pepper is becoming widely available as a dried food in grocery and specialty stores. Only peppers that are naturally dried under relatively cool conditions will contain viable seeds for sprouting though, so never use smoked or processed peppers if you want to germinate seed.

Why are my pepper seeds not germinating?

If the seeds do germinate, it will be at lower rates than new pepper seeds. For more information, check out my article on how long seeds last. Pepper seeds do not need light to germinate, but seedlings need light to grow. Peppers seeds can germinate without light.

Can you plant seeds from store bought peppers?

You can keep the crop going by saving seeds from a mature pepper or two to plant next year. If the fruits you bought were red, orange, yellow or other ripe color, you’ve probably got mature seeds.

Can you plant a whole pepper?

Viable seed comes from fully ripe bell peppers, which are usually just past the preferred eating stage of maturity. Pick the peppers once they reach their full color and the skins begin to wrinkle. If you aren’t storing seeds, you can plant them in pots right after collecting them.
