Why did my saltwater tank crash?

Sometimes a tank crash is due to a mistake by the reef keeper while other times it is carelessness or just bad luck. As for mistakes, they do happen, although many can be prevented by doing some homework before acting to correct a problem or attempting to achieve better results.

Why does my aquarium cycle keep crashing?

A filter crash occurs when the beneficial bacteria that are used biological filtration are killed, diminished or are removed. Crashing can also happen when no biological filtration is present and only chemical filtration is being used; eventually chemical media becomes exhausted.

What is a Fowlr tank?

FOWLR AQUARIUMS (Fish-only-with-live-rock) Fish-only-with-live-rock (FOWLR) aquariums can be described as a blend or a stepping stone that bridges FO aquariums and reef aquariums. While marine fish are still the focus of FOWLR aquariums, basic elements of the reef aquarium are introduced – most notably, live rock.

How do you clean a neglected fish tank?

For particularly stubborn cleaning problems, prepare a 10 percent bleach solution and soak the items for 15 minutes. Scrub any remaining residue off, rinse well in running water, and let air-dry to eliminate residual bleach. Don’t put them back in the aquarium until there is no more chlorine smell present.

What causes pH to crash in reef?

If this is so, why does the pH in your saltwater aquarium change, usually dropping lower? In most cases, the pH drop is due to the acid produced by the production and reduction of ammonia. How is seachem stability used?

Instructions: Shake well before use, Turn off UV/ozone. Use one capful for each 40 L on the first day with a new aquarium. Then use one capful for each 80 L daily for seven days. Fish and other aquatic species may be introduced at any time as long as the dosage is maintained for seven days.

Do I need a sump for a Fowlr tank?

A sump is certainly not a requirement. Sumps don’t really add anything as far as filtration. It is really just a place to put equipment like skimmers and heaters so they are not in or on the tank. They also add stability to the tank by increasing total water volume.

Do I need a refugium for a Fowlr tank?

This is because the return pump will shred most of the pods. If its to reduce nitrates, then there is definitely a benefit to having the regufium. ALTHOUGH, if you’re doing a FOWLR, it would be better to just get an oversized skimmer to do that job.

Why did my fish tank get cloudy overnight?

After starting a new aquarium, it is not uncommon for the aquarium to become cloudy. This is due to beneficial, nitrogen converting bacteria colonizing to oxidize ammonia and nitrites. These bacteria break down fish waste, decaying plant debris, and unconsumed food into ammonia.
