Why are Rangers called gers?

The club are nicknamed The Teddy Bears, from the rhyming slang for Gers, which in turn is short for Rangers, and the fans are known to each other as “Bluenoses”. Why are Arbroath called lichties?

The Club was founded in 1878 and plays home matches at Gayfield Park. They play in maroon strips and are nicknamed “The Red Lichties” due to the red light that used to guide fishing boats back from the North Sea to the Burgh’s harbour.

What is a lichtie?

The “Red Lichtie” name appears to have originated from a light used to guide the fishermen to harbour. Whether this was a beacon lit by the monks of Arbroath Abbey in the distinctive round window high on the south transept of the abbey or a light erected by harbour authorities in later years is a matter of conjecture.

How did St Mirren get their name?

They are named after Saint Mirin, the founder of a church at the site of Paisley Abbey and Patron Saint of Paisley. There is also a street in Paisley named St Mirren Street.
