What is the difference between a vet and a vet tech?

A vet tech is basically the nurse of the animal world. Vet techs get to perform a variety of tasks, so you won’t just watch from the sidelines while the veterinarian does all of the interesting jobs. Veterinarians must complete years of schooling to earn the degree, while a vet tech degree takes much less time.

  • Collecting specimens.
  • Assisting in research.
  • Performing laboratory procedures.
  • Preparing animals and equipment for surgical procedures.

Can Vet techs perform physical exams?

Veterinary Technicians will perform routine physical exams each time a dog or cat comes to the veterinarian’s office. They will take or confirm the dog’s or cat’s history and take vital signs. During the physical exam, the vet tech will note the body weight, temperature, pulse and heart rate and respiratory rate.

Can Vet techs give vaccinations?

Can Vet techs euthanize?

Euthanasia can only be performed by a licensed vet or technician. The AVMA has drafted guidelines to provide veterinarians with assistance to relieve the “pain and suffering of animals that are to be euthanized.”

Do vet techs put dogs down?

Currently around 10 states allow vet techs to perform euthanasia with (Direct) or without (Indirect) the veterinarian present. Nine states indicate the technician may perform it as long as the veterinarian is on site and able to assist should the need arise.

The veterinarian, on the other hand, earns an average of $43 per hour. This translates to $31, 570 and $91,250 per year for veterinary technicians and veterinarian respectively.
