What is an au pair job?

“What is an au pair really?” The global definition of an Au Pair is ‘a young foreign person, typically a woman, who helps with housework or childcare in exchange for food, a room, and some pocket money’, but in South Africa, an Au Pair is, although similar in some respects, quite different.

Is au pair considered work?

Au pairs usually live with the family they work for and are unlikely to be classed as workers or employees. They are not entitled to the National Minimum Wage or paid holidays.

As former au pair and TV journalist / author Tove Meyer puts it: “Being an au pair is a very good addition to your resume, because it shows that you work hard, take responsibility, and are brave enough to leave your country for a new culture”.

What is the difference between nanny and au pair?

Do I need a degree to be an au pair?

Classes must be taken at a university, college or continuing education program sponsored by a college. Online courses do not meet the educational requirement for au pairs.

How much money do you need to be an au pair?

Au pairs are entitled to receive the national minimum wage, which amounts to $18.29 per hour (gross). The average cost of “room and board” (AUD $350) is to be deducted from the total. On this basis, we can recommend an amount of 200-250 AUD for 30 hours/week.
