What is a 50 34 crankset?

By Eleanor Gray

A compact chainset has a 50-tooth outer chainring and a 34-tooth inner chainring. This means that the gears are lower (easier to turn, but they’ll progress you a shorter distance per pedal revolution) than you get with a 53/39 chainset (above) with the same cassette.

What size chainset do I need?

What chainset is best for me?

Less than 5’1″165mm
5’1″ to 5’7″170mm
5’7″ to 5’11”172.5mm

What is a triple crankset?

What is a triple chainset? A road triple chainset (the crank arms and chainrings combined) consists of three chainrings. The big (outer) ring typically has 50 teeth, the middle ring usually has 39 teeth and the small (inner) ring most commonly has 30 teeth, known as a 50/39/30 combination.

What is a triple chain set?

A triple chainset features three chainrings. The middle and outer chainrings are similar ratios to those found on compact or standard chainrings. The big benefit of a triple chainset is that it has a very small inner chainring so offers a very low gear.

How many gears are in a triple chain?

Triple chainsets This is a chainset with three chainrings. Depending on the number of sprockets on the bike’s cassette, this means the bike will have 21, 24, 27, 30 gears. To change your chainset from double to triple or vice versa, bear in mind that you will probably also need to change your shifters, front mech, rear mech and bottom bracket.

Do you need a triple chainset for your bike?

With the advent of 9, 10 and 11-speed groupsets and an increased cassette range, with 11-30 and 11-34 now common options, there’s less need for a triple chainset. You can now get a wide spread of ratios with less duplication of gears. A triple chainset is essentially a double with a smaller chainring bolted on.

Can I change from a road triple chain to two chainrings?

Chainging from a road triple chainset to one with two chainrings is often not cost effective as it requires a new chainset, left shifter, front derailleur and chain. The two largest chainrings on a road triple chainsets typically have a 130mm BCD. The smallest inner ring usually has a 74mm BCD.

What are Roadroad triple chainsets?

Road triple chainsets are typically paired with cassettes (rear cogs or sprockets) that have an 11 or 12 tooth small sprocket as the smallest cog giving you a 50 + 11 or 50 +12 biggest gear.
