What foods cause exercise induced urticaria?

By Sarah Smith

Many different types of foods have been shown to cause food-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis (FDEIA), including wheat, shellfish, nuts, tomatoes, peanuts, fish, pork, beef, mushrooms, hazelnuts, eggs, peaches, apples, milk, and alcohol.

Can urticaria develop into anaphylaxis?

The clinical spectrum of allergic reactions in children can range from hives or urticaria to life-threatening anaphylaxis. Complicating medical decision-making is that allergic reactions often are rapidly progressive, and the child who presents to triage with hives may develop acute anaphylaxis in the waiting room.

What is the most common food to trigger an anaphylaxis reaction?

Although a wide range of foods has been reported as the cause of FIA, the most commonly implicated foods worldwide are peanut, tree nuts, milk, egg, sesame seeds, fish, and shellfish2,3,5,6,9,25,26 in both adults and children (Table 1). However, the individual food allergy varies by culture and population.

Does exercise induced anaphylaxis go away?

The prognosis for patients with exercise-induced anaphylaxis is generally favorable. Most patients experience fewer and less severe attacks over time. Although rare, fatalities have been reported, though many of these cases had extenuating circumstances. No cure for this disorder exists.

How long does exercise-induced urticaria last?

Cholinergic urticaria induced by exercise usually manifests approximately 6 minutes after onset of exercise and increases for approximately 12 to 25 minutes….CLASSIFICATION.

How does exercise cause anaphylaxis?

Exercise may result in changes in mucosal tissue osmolality, which may result in basophil histamine release. A case report demonstrated increased basophil histamine release in response to hyperosmolar medium in a patient with food-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis compared with normal controls.

How do you prevent hives when exercising?

Avoidance is the best treatment for cholinergic hives, but that may be difficult in warm weather or when exercising. “CU can usually be prevented by daily administering a long-acting, non-sedating antihistamine, such as cetirizine [Zyrtec],” says Ostro. If a rash does appear, it helps to cool the area promptly.
