What can I add to SPOD mix?

By Rachel Acosta

Add a whole tin of sweetcorn to add a touch of colour that will catch the eye of any carp. I also like to top my hook bait with an artificial piece of sweetcorn for that added attraction and to blend in with the spod mix.

How much SPOD mix Do I put out?

As a very loose rule of thumb I always say that you should put three times as many spods in as you think to achieve the effect that you think you are getting. So if you think six spods is the type of bait spread you want, put eighteen in to achieve it!

What is Spodding carp?

What is a spod? A spod is basically a cylindrical bait rocket with a buoyant nose cone. Spodding is a method used by many carp anglers as it enables the angler to very quickly bait up a swim with light or small baits beyond catapult range.

How long will SPOD mix last?

When I fish for tench with similar spod mix after half a bucket there will be action for about two hours then it dies off unless more bait is introduced. I would introduce a little bit more regularly if I were you so the bream dont eat it all and dissappear. Particle will be fine for three days.

Is rice good for carp?

White rice is low in fat and sugar and is a good source of energy as it is high in carbohydrates. With carbohydrates being the main attraction and rice grains being quite small, it is an excellent choice to entice carp into your swim and get them grubbing around on the lake bed close to your hook bait.

What line do you need for Spodding?

A 50lb braided leader is perfect. Your mainline for spodding can be either a dedicated floating spod braid or in more recent times a lighter mono such as 10lb which can be easier to work with for some anglers with less chance of wind knots and braided line tangles.

How much bait is needed for a 24 hour session?

With quicker overnight sessions, you are trying to get bites quickly, so you don’t want to overdo the bait. For me, a rough rule will be 20 to 50 baits per rod. This is usually less in a close margin spot, as they generally will be small intimate swims, where six to 10 baits are more than enough for a bite.

How do you prepare a fishing Partible?

PARTIBLEND – No pre-soaking necessary, just bring to the boil and simmer for a minute. For best results leave in water for 12 hours stirring occasionally. TARES -Pre-soak for 12-14 hours then bring to the boil and simmer for 20-30 minutes.

Do you need a shock leader for Spodding?

Spod rods have a high test curve, e.g. 5.5lb, which means they have the ability to cope with the force of the cast and help to accurately propel your spomb to its chosen mark. Always use a shock leader when casting a spod or spomb, again to help reduce the chance of a crack off.

Can I use Mono for Spodding?

Mono line is also a good choice for spodding and is more resistance to tangles and wind knots. Unlike braid, you can fill the spool up to the lip when using mono line and won’t encounter issues.

Can you freeze SPOD mix?

I freeze up buckets of spod mix in a chest freezer and Ive never noticed any problems with it once its defrosted. A ten kilo bucket takes an age to defrost so I wouldnt take it out the night before if i were you. I had one take three days to totally thaw out in my garage.
