What are the stages of fire development in a compartment?

For our purposes, the stages of fire development in a compartment will be described as incipient, growth, fully developed and decay (see Figure 2). Despite dividing fire development into four “stages” the actual process is continuous with “stages” flowing from one to the next.

How do you prevent flashover?

Ways to prevent flashover. By proper ventilation, we can eliminate superheated air and gases from the compartment. Depending on the fire, you can call for a horizontal or vertical vent. Just be conscious of the venting and location of the vent to not get other portions of the uninvolved structure involved.

What are the characteristics that may indicate the potential from a backdraft to occur?

Characteristic warning signs of a backdraft include yellow or brown smoke, smoke which exits small holes in puffs (a sort of breathing effect) and is often found around the edges of doors and windows, and windows which appear brown or black when viewed from the exterior.

How hot can a fully developed fire get?

Bonfire – The temperature of a bonfire gradually heats up to around 600°C, but bonfires can reach 1000-1100°C. Bunsen burner – A bunsen burner is adjustable, with safety flames measuring around 300°C. Fully open bunsen burners can reach 1500°C, with piercing blue and white flames visible.

How quickly can flashover occur after flames are ignited?

Knowing the warning signs are key in giving you the signal to get out immediately. Multiple sources average your time for a flashover to be from 7-10 seconds. So the best-case scenario is you have 10 seconds to react and get to safety. This is usually about 5′ of distance for the average firefighter.

How long can a firefighter survive in a flashover?

According to IFTSA Firefighter Principles & Tactics, the bunker gear of today will protect an individual for no more than 15 seconds if succumbed to flashover conditions.

How do you deal with a Backdraught?

Most of the time, this is accomplished by cutting an opening in the roof and refraining from opening any windows or doors on or below the fire floor until conditions have changed. This means that no search and rescue can occur and no water is being put on the fire until the vertical ventilation can be completed.

What causes a fire backdraft?

A backdraft is caused by the sudden introduction of air into a fire that has depleted most of the available oxygen in a room or building. When a fire has depleted most of its oxygen, the flames will die down, but the fuel will still burn in a smoldering state and still generate heat, like with charcoal.

Fire occurs whenever combustible fuel in the presence of oxygen at an extremely high temperature becomes gas. Flames are the visual indicator of the heated gas. Fire can also occur from lower-temperature sources. Over time, combustible materials such as smoldering embers can reach their ignition temperature.
