Is GAF Liberty base sheet waterproof?

LIBERTY™ SBS Self-Adhering Base/ Ply Sheet is a durable modified bitumen membrane designed and manufactured to meet industry and code requirements. The product is designed for use as a waterproof- ing membrane and is reinforced with a glass mat, which is coated with a polymer-modified asphalt.

What is a SBS roof?

SBS modified bitumen roofing is a material made out of asphalt and synthetic rubber, making it an exceptionally flexible material for flat roofs. This material works best on low-slope commercial roofs, and many manufacturers use glass, polyester, or composite reinforcements.

What is base sheet used for?

The base sheet provides waterproofing and a top surface that can bond with the cap sheet. The cap sheet provides colour, protection from fire, ultraviolet (UV) radiation protection and resistance to mechanical abuse. The base sheet and cap sheet must be designed to work together.

How is SBS roofing installed?

SBS Installation During installation, a variety of reinforcements are used with the asphalt, including fiberglass, polyester mats and scrims, etc. In addition, SBS can be installed with a variety of application methods including cold applied, heat weld, self-adhered, mechanically fastened, and hot applied applications.

What is the difference between APP and SBS roofing?

The basic difference between SBS and APP is that APP-modified bitumen is a “plastic asphalt” and SBS-modified bitumen is an “elastic asphalt.” Why? When torching APP roofing membranes, the bitumen begins to flow like candle wax when it reaches temperatures above 300°F.

What does SBS Modified mean?

Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS) describes a family of synthetic rubber derived from styrene and butadiene. SBS is a thermo plastic elastomer that has an excellent abrasion resistance and aging stability when blended with bitumen, making it the perfect bitumen modifier to achieve cold flexibility and elastic properties.

What is asphalt primer used for?

It is used as a one-coat application when fast drying is needed to accelerate the roof system installation process. IKO Standard Asphalt Primer promotes adhesion and may be used to prime and/or seal gypsum, masonry, metal, wood, concrete, asphalt and other similar substrates.
