Is being in a union good or bad?

By Eleanor Gray

Unions increase workers’ negotiation powers. Unionized workers can better negotiate their contracts because they can bargain as a collective unit. Without a union, workers have to negotiate their pay and benefits on their own — and studies show that many women and minorities have a tougher time doing this.

Are unions lazy?

IF YOU’VE ever spent time in a union shop, in America at least, it’s hard to believe they do. It is not that union workers are lazy, a favourite canard of the right; at least in my experience, union workers are higher quality than you would expect for the job they are doing. To be sure, unions often do very good work.

Why are unions declining?

Employer resistance to unionization of their workers is a key factor in the decline of unions. But one of the reasons this resistance has been so effective is that the remedies available under the “National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) . . .

Do unions protect lazy workers?

No union contract requires an employer to keep a worker who is lazy, incompetent or constantly absent or late. Grain and General Services Union does not hire or terminate the workers of any employer.

Unionized workers have better access to retirement benefits. Employees that are represented by a union in the workplace have better access to retirement benefits. In fact, workers who are employed within a unionized workplace are more likely to have 401ks or IRAs, as well as pensions.

Why is it bad to join a union?

Do you think unions are a good thing?

I firmly believe that unions can be a good thing, a strong counterbalance to the forces that drive companies to wring every last dollar out of every single transaction, whether with their customer or their employee.

Is the union movement good or bad for the economy?

But like most things, the collaberation of all of the bargaining power into a few union leaders isn’t a good thing. So, the answer may be that unions are both good and bad for the economy, but I would argue that they are bad.

Is it bad for an employer to have a union?

Employers may have trouble weeding out ineffective employees if they belong to unions. In theory, at least, unionized workers might become so comfortable and protected that they lose the incentive to work hard for their employer.

How are union wages good for the economy?

First of all, higher wages go to the workers. These wages are then spent throughout the economy. That means that higher wages for union workers can lead to more spending and a more robust economy. Of course this is only part of the picture, but from what I can see it is the only thing that a union does to help the economy.
