How long does a bike chain ring last?

By Daniel Rodriguez

A steady rider who stays on the big ring, keeps the drivetrain clean and doesn’t let the chain get too long before replacing it, and started with good quality components can get 60,000+ miles out of a chain ring.

When should I replace my bike chain ring?

To keep these parts working well, you need to replace your chain before it becomes extremely worn. My rule of thumb is to replace it at 75 per cent wear (as measured with a chain-wear indicator). If you stick with this guideline, your cassette and chainrings will last a lot longer.

How long should a 12 speed chain last?

There are many variables that affect how long a chain will last. It could last several months, or it could last much longer. A typical mountain bike chain will last 750 miles of single track riding. It’s not easy to gauge exactly how long a chain will last, but there are ways to prolong the life of the chain.

Do I need to change my cassette when I change my chain?

You certainly don’t need to change the cassette and chainrings every time you swap the chain, though, it’s just that you should check out the health and performance of these other drivetrain components as soon as you’ve installed a new one. If the chain skips under pedalling load then it’s time for a new cassette.

Can I put a new chain on an old cassette?

The chain and cassette wear together. If the chain was very worn, and you put a new chain onto an old cassette, at best it will wear the new chain faster than it should. At worst it will not engage properly and can skip or you may get poor shifting or even break the new chain.

How do I Lube a bike chain?

Choose a wet lube if you’ll be biking in wet weather. Rain, snow, and slushy roads can wash away dry lube on a bike chain. Wet lube will be more resistant. You can find bike lubes of all kinds online or at your local bike shop.

What is a bike chainring?

Chainrings are the part of the bicycle that attach to where the peddles are located. It is where the chain connects the pedals to the back wheel. The chain then rests on this “sprocket”.

What is a bicycle chain ring?

chainring (plural chainrings) The large forward ring on a bicycle that a chain attaches to, in order to transfer energy to a wheel. It consists of one or more sprockets that are driven by the cranks and pedals of the bicycle.

What is the size of a bike chain?

Chains come in 3⁄32 in (2.4 mm), 1⁄8 in (3.2 mm), 5⁄32 in (4.0 mm), or 3⁄16 in (4.8 mm) roller widths, the internal width between the inner plates. 1⁄8 in (3.2 mm) chains are typically used on bikes with a single rear sprocket: those with coaster brakes, hub gears, fixed gears such as track bicycles, or BMX bikes.
