How do you handle mercury safely?

By Sarah Smith

Safe Handling Wear standard laboratory attire, i.e., a lab coat, clothing that covers the legs, close-toed shoes, safety glasses and gloves (nitrile or nitrile rubber) when handling mercury. Mercury should be used only in closed systems to prevent exposure to vapors.

What are the safety measures in handling thermometer using mercury?

Avoid exposure and injury by wearing nitrile gloves (mercury is absorbed through the skin), a lab coat, and safety glasses. Use tongs or other tools to pick up glass from the broken thermometer. Mercury droplets can be swept into a container with an index card.

Can you handle mercury with gloves?

It’s never safe to touch mercury. In its liquid metal form, mercury absorbs instantly into the skin; but it also has an extremely high vapor pressure, so an open container of mercury disperses the metal into the air.

What are the hazards of mercury?

When heated it becomes a colorless, odorless gas. Some of the health effects exposure to mercury may cause include: irritation to the eyes, skin, and stomach; cough, chest pain, or difficulty breathing, insomnia, irritability, indecision, headache, weakness or exhaustion, and weight loss.

What organ is affected by mercury?

High exposure to inorganic mercury may result in damage to the gastrointestinal tract, the nervous system, and the kidneys. Both inorganic and organic mercury are absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract and affect other systems through this route.

What is the safety precautions to be observed of sterilizer?

Wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including a lab coat, heat resistant gloves, and eye protection, especially when unloading the autoclave. Never sealing containers; under pressure they pose an explosion risk. Never opening the door to the autoclave if there is water running out the bottom.

What should you not put in an autoclave?

Mercury is a metal that can turn to vapor at room temperatures. The lungs can easily absorb this vapor, and once mercury is in the body, it can pass through cell membranes and the blood-brain barrier. Mercury is also a neurotoxin, and it can cause neurological damage that leads to hallucinations and psychosis.

Who banned mercury?

The EU
Mercury emissions to the air dropped by around 73 % between 1990 and 2014 and to water by 71 % between 2007 and 2014. The EU banned mercury-containing batteries, thermometers, barometers and blood pressure monitors. Mercury is also no longer allowed in most switches and relays found in electronic equipment.
