Does your basal body temperature stay high if you are pregnant?

By Michael Gray

Usually, in the menstrual cycle, temperature dips again right before we get our periods. However, in early pregnancy, temperature stays high. This is due to the raised level of the progesterone hormone, which stops the uterine wall from shedding and helps with the implantation of the fertilized egg cell.

Is it normal for your temperature to be higher when pregnant?

Your normal body temperature may rise during pregnancy, but it’s unlikely to be a huge increase, says Christine Greves, MD, an ob-gyn at the Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies in Orlando, Florida. So what is a normal body temperature for a pregnant woman? “It could rise about 0.2 degrees Fahrenheit,” she says.

How long does your BBT stay high if pregnant?

Once your period starts, you’ll notice that the temperatures drop back down to their normal pre-ovulatory temperature levels. If you’re pregnant, you will not have a period and your temperatures will stay elevated. Your body’s post-ovulation phase (called the Luteal Phase) can only last for a maximum of about 16 days.

Does higher BBT mean higher progesterone?

Basal body temperature (BBT) is one indicator people may track when using a fertility awareness based method (FAM) for contraception. Progesterone causes an increase in BBT of about 0.5ºF/0.3ºC to 1.0°F/0.6ºC (33,34). A sustained increase in BBT is a sign that ovulation has occurred.

Is BBT reliable for pregnancy?

BBT thermometers are not 100 percent accurate, and some women ovulate even without an increase in temperature. False readings can be caused by a variety of things, including waking up at different times in the morning.

What is the average pregnant woman’s temperature?

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends that pregnant women never let their core body temperature rise above 102.2 degrees Fahrenheit. (A pregnant woman’s body temperature is often already elevated around 0.4 degrees above the normal 98.6.)

Is BBT higher or lower than regular temp?

Using BBT to predict ovulation During the follicular phase of the cycle, BBT stays in the lower range, generally between 97 and 98 degrees Fahrenheit (36.1 to 36.6 degrees Celsius) until approximately one day before ovulation, when BBT reaches its lowest point.

What should your temperature be when pregnant?

Does progesterone cause higher temps?

Progesterone increases your metabolic rate, causing your body temperature to rise, increasing your appetite and energy levels.

Can room temp affect BBT?

Sure, it’s nice to crank up the heat or crawl under an electric blanket on a chilly night, but the toasty environment may affect your temperature. This isn’t true for everyone, but pay close attention to your BBT after sleeping in a room that’s warmer or colder than usual.
