Can you put ski skins on a splitboard?

By Daniel Rodriguez

Splitboard climbing skins are strips of fabric that attach to the bottom of your backcountry splitboard to allow you to climb up hills with the “skis” on your feet. Most skins attach to splitboards with tip loops, tail clips and sticky glue.

Are splitboard skins universal?

SPLITBOARD+ UNIVERSAL For any location and all conditions. Universal nylon plush material for durability and versatility. Optimal balance of grip/ glide/weight/durability.

How tight should splitboard skins be?

Skins climb best if the majority of the split ski is covered almost edge-to-edge with only the width of the edge exposed on each side. You don’t want them so tight that they are pulling the skin off the base but a little tension can help the glue stick to the ski.

What kind of skins should I get?

If this is the case, you’ll want to choose skins based on the width of the widest part of your ski, the tip. Ideally, you want the width of the skin to be narrower than the tip of your ski by about 5-6 mm. If you can’t locate the perfect size, it’s usually fine to go slightly narrower.

Can you use regular bindings on a Splitboard?

Yes, you can use your normal boots in a splitboard binding. Snowboarders who primarily splitboard usually have a vibram or high traction sole for climbing or hiking though, when you’re not in snowboard mode. Splitboarding is a damn good time—and a new way to experience the mountain.

Are Jones skins good?

The Jones Universal skins are the Top Pick Award winner. They are good choice for any splitboarder and especially recommended for experienced splitters due to their improved glide and reduced weight. We also appreciated that this company brought a mohair/nylon mix skin to the splitboard market.

Should you wax your splitboard?

Minor wear and tear to the base of your splitboard is normal and most of the time, a fresh wax is all you need to keep your turns effortless. Check the base of your splitboard for visible dirt, sap, and oils; also, look for dry areas, which often first appear along the contact points.

Can you cut ski skins?

You can just center the skin and cut both sides to achieve perfectly tailored skins with full coverage and exposed edges.
