Can you major in music with no experience?

You do not need any experience in music. However, if by “major in music” you mean “performance” and/or “music education”, then no. Typically, you cannot enter a university, intending to major in music, without previous experience/training. Most institutions require an audition as part of the application process.

How hard is it to get into a music conservatory?

Getting into a good music conservatory is still an incredible challenge and it really does require a tremendous amount of work. As a pianist you will need to have mastered at least one Prelude and Fugue from book one or two of Johann Sebastian Bach – excluding some of the easier preludes and fugues.

Is majoring in music hard?

Depending on a student’s area of specialization, music can be a difficult major. Most music programs come with specialization tracks, including music theory and history, performance, and composition, just to name a few. Some schools even have specializations focused on different types of music or instruments.

And it turns out, the biggest hurdles aren’t stiff hands or an aging brain. For adults, the desire to play an instrument is often awakened by a great piece of music.

Yes, a music degree is worth it for most aspiring musicians. Music degrees are essential for employment in the music industry as well as building well-rounded musicians. However, in some areas of music, a degree may not be necessary.

Is music school hard to get into?

Raw musical talent is one factor, and a super important one, of course. But the admissions and audition process for the best music schools is always highly competitive, and also often complicated and confusing. What it takes to get accepted into a music program is different than for a typical college or university.

Should I go to a music conservatory?

If you want to drench yourself in nothing but music, for example, a music conservatory is probably going to be best. If you want to study primarily music, but also want to round out your education by minoring in or sampling other fields, like sports, science or business, a liberal arts school would make a better fit.

Absolutely not! It’s never too late to start making music! Go to your local music store and ask for a referral to someone who can give you lessons on your chosen instrument, or vocal instruction. You may also find lessons available at a local college or university.
